The user experience benefit is obvious. The SEO problem is combinatorial: five filters with six options each can generate tens of thousands of URLs from a single category, and most are near-duplicates of each other.
Search engines will crawl those URLs. On a large catalogue this consumes the majority of your crawl allocation, leaving genuinely important pages crawled rarely and new products slow to index.
The goal is not to eliminate facets but to decide deliberately which combinations deserve to be indexable. Some genuinely have search demand — 'blue running shoes' is a real query — while 'blue running shoes sorted by price descending, page 4' is not.
Why Faceted Navigation matters
On sites above a few thousand URLs, faceted navigation is usually the single largest source of crawl waste. Controlling it typically produces faster indexation of new products and better rankings for category pages, without publishing any new content.
Deciding what to index
Index single-attribute facets with real search demand — colour, brand, size — as clean canonical URLs. Block multi-attribute combinations, sort orders, and pagination parameters through robots directives and canonical tags. A retailer with 8,000 products cut 400,000 crawlable URLs to roughly 12,000 indexable ones and saw new products indexed in days rather than weeks.
Common mistakes
Leaving it entirely uncontrolled
The default for most e-commerce platforms. Every filter combination is crawlable, and crawl budget drains into permutations nobody searches for.
Blocking everything with robots.txt
Over-correction. Blocked URLs can still accumulate links and their canonical signals can't be read, because the crawler never sees the page. Prefer canonicals and noindex for pages you want understood but not ranked.
Canonicalising valuable facets away
Pointing every filter page at the bare category throws away rankings for genuinely searched combinations. Some facets deserve to rank.
Ignoring internal links to filters
If your own navigation links to thousands of filter combinations, you're actively directing crawl budget into them regardless of your canonical strategy.
