What is Funnel Analysis?

Funnel analysis measures how many people complete each step of a process, such as viewing a product, adding to cart, starting checkout and buying, so you can see where the biggest drop-offs happen.

How it works

Define the steps in order, then count how many people reach each one and what share continue to the next. GA4's funnel exploration report, and most product analytics tools, can build this for you.

Reading the results

Look for the step with the largest drop compared with what is normal for that step. Then break it down by device, traffic source or new versus returning visitors to find who struggles most.

Turning it into fixes

Watch session recordings or run quick usability tests at the problem step. Common fixes include shorter forms, clearer prices, fewer surprise costs and better mobile layouts.

Why Funnel Analysis matters

Small improvements at the leakiest step often add more sales than extra traffic does. Funnel analysis shows exactly where to focus first.

The shipping surprise

An online gear shop saw most visitors who started checkout leave at the shipping step. Showing shipping costs on product pages and adding a free shipping threshold reduced that drop-off.

Common mistakes

  • Too many steps

Very detailed funnels get noisy. Start with the four or five steps that matter most.

  • Averages hide problems

A step may work on desktop and fail on phones. Segment by device and source.

  • Fixing without testing

Confirm the fix helped with an A/B test or a before-and-after comparison.
