What is Image Optimization?

Image optimization is the process of making website images as small and fast to load as possible without visible loss of quality, and making them easy for search engines and assistive technology to understand.

Size and format

Resize images to the largest size they will actually display, compress them, and use modern formats like WebP or AVIF, which are usually much smaller than JPEG or PNG at similar quality.

Loading smartly

Serve different sizes for phones and desktops, lazy-load images further down the page, and don't lazy-load the main image at the top, since that slows down the first view.

Helping search engines

Use descriptive file names and alt text that explain what the image shows. This helps image search, accessibility and context for the page.

Why Image Optimization matters

Images are often the heaviest part of a page. Optimizing them is one of the quickest ways to speed up a site, which helps visitors, conversions and Core Web Vitals.

Huge photos, slow pages

A real estate agency uploaded listing photos straight from a camera, each several megabytes. Resizing and converting them to WebP cut page weight sharply, and listing pages loaded much faster on phones.

Common mistakes

  • Uploading full-size originals

Camera photos are far larger than any screen needs. Resize before or during upload.

  • Lazy-loading the hero image

Delaying the top image hurts loading speed. Load it right away.

  • Empty or stuffed alt text

Describe the image plainly. Don't leave it blank or cram keywords into it.
