Microsite versus landing page
A landing page is a single page, usually on your main site, built for one action. A microsite has several pages and its own navigation, so it can tell a bigger story, like an event schedule, speakers and registration.
When it makes sense
Microsites suit short campaigns, events, product lines with a different audience, or partnerships where the look and message need to stand apart from the main brand.
The SEO tradeoff
A separate domain starts with no search authority, and links it earns don't help your main site. If long-term search traffic matters, a section on your main site is usually the stronger choice.
Why Microsite matters
Microsites can give a campaign room to stand out, but they cost extra to build and maintain. Choosing the right format keeps effort and search value where they help most.
A conference that needed its own home
A trade association ran an annual conference with sessions, speakers, sponsors and registration. Moving it from scattered pages on the main site to a dedicated microsite made it easier for attendees to find everything, while the main site linked to it prominently.
Common mistakes
Building one for every campaign
Too many microsites split effort and confuse visitors. Use a landing page when one page is enough.
Letting old microsites rot
Outdated microsites with old dates and broken links hurt trust. Redirect or retire them when the campaign ends.
No link back to the main site
Visitors should be able to reach your main brand. Link the two clearly.
