What is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization

AEO is the practice of shaping content so search engines, voice assistants and AI tools can lift it as a direct answer to a question.

Where AEO came from

AEO started with featured snippets and voice search, where Google and assistants read out one answer instead of a list of links. The goal was to be that answer. AI Overviews and chat tools have made the same skill more valuable.

How AEO differs from SEO

SEO aims to rank a page in a list. AEO aims to have a specific passage chosen as the answer. A page can rank well and still never be quoted if the answer is buried, vague or spread across several paragraphs.

How AEO relates to GEO

GEO, generative engine optimization, focuses on being cited by AI tools that write their own answers. AEO and GEO overlap almost completely in practice: both reward clear questions, direct answers, specific facts and strong structured data.

What makes a page easy to quote

Put the question in a heading, answer it in the first one or two sentences, then add detail. Use lists for steps, tables for comparisons and plain numbers for facts. Mark up the page with relevant schema so engines know what each part is.

Why AEO matters

When an answer appears directly in search or an AI tool, fewer people click through. Pew Research found people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits when a Google AI summary appeared, compared with 15% without one. Being the quoted answer is how a brand stays visible in those moments.

From buried answer to quotable answer

A page titled 'Our approach to pricing' that explains costs in its fifth paragraph rarely gets quoted. A section headed 'How much does a website redesign cost?' that opens with 'Our redesigns typically cost $8,500 to $21,000, depending on page count and features' gives search and AI tools a clean answer to lift.

Common mistakes

  • Answering after the story

Long introductions push the answer down the page. Engines favor passages that answer immediately and then explain.

  • One page for every question

Cramming dozens of questions into a single wall of text makes each answer hard to isolate. Clear headings for each question work better.

  • Vague, hedged answers

'It depends' with nothing after it gives nothing to quote. Give a range, a rule of thumb or the factors that decide it.

  • Ignoring structured data

FAQ, HowTo, Article and Organization markup help engines read and attribute your answers correctly.
