What is SERP?

Search Engine Results Page

A SERP, or search engine results page, is the page a search engine like Google shows after someone searches, listing ads, organic results and other features for that query.

What's on a modern SERP

Paid ads, organic results, AI-generated answers like Google's AI Overviews, map results with local businesses, People Also Ask boxes, featured snippets, images, videos, shopping results and more. The mix changes with every search.

Why rankings aren't the whole story

Ranking first organically can still sit below ads, a map pack and an AI answer. That's why click-through rates vary so much for the same position on different searches.

Reading the SERP before you write

Looking at what Google shows for a search tells you what searchers want. If the top results are product pages, a blog post will struggle. If they're guides, a sales page will.

Why SERP matters

Your visibility depends on what the results page looks like, not just your ranking. Knowing which features appear for your key searches shows where to focus: local SEO, ads, content for AI answers or rich results.

The map pack mattered more than rank one

A dental practice ranked first organically for 'dentist near me' but got few calls from it. The SERP showed ads and a map pack above the organic results. Improving its Google Business Profile to appear in the map pack brought far more calls than the organic ranking did.

Common mistakes

  • Tracking rank without looking at the page

A top ranking means less if ads, maps and AI answers push it down. Check what the SERP actually looks like for your key terms.

  • Ignoring search intent

The SERP shows what Google thinks searchers want. Creating the wrong type of page for a query rarely ranks.

  • Forgetting local results

For local businesses, the map pack often gets most of the attention. It needs its own strategy.
