What is Headless CMS?

A headless CMS is a content management system that stores and manages content but doesn't control how it looks. The content is delivered through an API to a separately built website, app or other screen.

Traditional versus headless

In a traditional CMS like classic WordPress, content and design live together, and the CMS builds the pages. In a headless setup, editors still write in a CMS, but developers build the front end separately, often with a framework like Next.js.

The benefits

Sites can be very fast, flexible and secure, and the same content can feed a website, mobile app and other channels. Developers can design the front end without fighting a theme system.

The trade-offs

It usually costs more to build and needs developers for many changes. Editors may lose the simple page preview and drag-and-drop tools they are used to unless those are built in.

Why Headless CMS matters

The CMS you choose affects speed, costs and how easily your team can update the site. Headless suits growing brands with complex needs, but it can be overkill for a small brochure site.

One place to update everything

A fitness brand ran a website and a mobile app with the same workout content entered twice. Moving to a headless CMS let the team publish once and show content in both places, and the rebuilt site loaded much faster.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing it for the buzzword

Headless adds cost and complexity. Make sure you need the flexibility before committing.

  • Forgetting the editors

If marketers can't preview or build pages easily, every change becomes a developer ticket. Plan the editing experience.

  • Losing SEO basics

Custom front ends must still handle titles, meta tags, redirects and sitemaps. Build them in from the start.
