Same tariffs, same city, three completely different outcomes
Milwaukee's manufacturing workforce runs 62% more concentrated than the national average. The 2025-2026 steel and aluminum tariffs hit every company in that cluster at once — and the results split three ways within a few miles of each other.

What's actually different about the Milwaukee metro
Harley-Davidson has been headquartered at 3700 W. Juneau Avenue since its founding, and is currently reactivating that historic building — new CEO Artie Starrs is requiring office staff back three days a week starting March 2026, rising to four by September, reversing pandemic-era remote policy. Four miles away, Rockwell Automation runs roughly 27,000 employees worldwide from its Milwaukee headquarters, and Milwaukee Tool — technically headquartered in nearby Brookfield — employs around 10,000 people while mid-expansion on a downtown Milwaukee campus targeting over 1,200 employees by the end of 2026. A.O. Smith rounds out the anchor roster with more than 11,000 employees globally, also headquartered in the city. One correction worth making explicitly: Johnson Controls is often assumed to be Milwaukee-headquartered, but its actual global headquarters moved to Cork, Ireland in 2016 as part of the Tyco International merger — what remains here is a genuine North American operational headquarters in nearby Glendale, roughly 1,500 people on-site and 2,000 across the metro, which is a real presence but not the company's corporate HQ. Metro Milwaukee's manufacturing workforce carries a location quotient of 1.62 — 62% more concentrated than the national average — across a metro of roughly 1.47 million people.
The same tariff shock produced an operating loss for one Milwaukee giant and record investment for another
Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs rose to 50% in June 2025 and were restructured again in April 2026 to include copper. Harley-Davidson absorbed $67 million in tariff costs in 2025, is forecasting $75-105 million more in 2026, posted a $29 million operating loss with sales down 12-13%, and began layoffs in March 2026. Rockwell Automation, headquartered a few miles away, kept the same tariffs EPS-neutral through pricing actions and beat its Q4 FY2025 forecasts. Milwaukee Tool spent this same period approving a $205.8 million campus expansion. Three companies, one shock, three outcomes — that's a genuinely specific story to build content around, not a generic 'tariffs affect manufacturers' talking point.
Harley's EV pivot is struggling exactly when the core business needed it to work
LiveWire, Harley's electric motorcycle spinoff, shipped just 653 units in 2025 after steep price cuts and lost roughly $75 million — a genuinely difficult moment for a company simultaneously absorbing tariff losses on its combustion-engine core business.
Milwaukee has a real, current manufacturing-employer exit story too, not just growth
After more than a century in Wisconsin, Master Lock's parent company announced in January 2025 it would close the Oak Creek world headquarters — about 120 jobs — and relocate to Illinois, following a 2023 closure of the Milwaukee manufacturing plant. Any Milwaukee industrial narrative that only tells the growth side is missing half the current picture.
Get company headquarters claims right — the Johnson Controls mistake is common enough to matter
A lot of regional business content still describes Johnson Controls as Milwaukee-headquartered. Its global HQ has been Cork, Ireland since 2016. Getting this specific, checkable fact right — or wrong — is exactly the kind of detail that signals whether a piece of content about this market was actually researched or assembled from outdated assumptions.

The part clients actually remember.
Not the reports. The uncomfortable conversation that changed the trajectory.
For two years marketing and finance argued about numbers in every board meeting. Digital Squad ended that argument by building one source of truth. The $2.1M we stopped wasting was almost a side effect.
We'd been burned by programmatic SEO before and were genuinely skeptical. The difference was that Digital Squad refused to publish pages that weren't useful. Fewer pages, vastly better results.
I told them on the first call that I wasn't going to become a TikTok personality. They built a system around that constraint instead of fighting it. Eight months later social is our biggest channel and I've been on camera maybe twice.
Milwaukee questions, answered straight.
Often more relevant. A tariff shock that's squeezing margins at the companies you supply to changes how they evaluate vendors — cost, reliability, and domestic sourcing all matter more right now than they did two years ago, and content that speaks to that directly outperforms generic capability statements.
