Bakersfield, CAReviewed September 5, 2026

Kern County grows a lot of America's carrots and pumps most of California's oil.

Bakersfield's economy is farms, oilfields and the warehouses along Highway 99 and I-5. Most of the companies here sell to other businesses, and many still win work by word of mouth. That's changing as buyers move online.

Market profile

What's actually different about Kern County

Bakersfield had about 403,000 people at the 2020 census, and Kern County about 909,000. It's one of the largest cities in California's Central Valley, about two hours north of Los Angeles.

Agriculture is huge. Kern County's 2024 crop report put the gross value of its farm production at about $7.96 billion, down about 8% from a record $8.63 billion the year before, as water limits, a heat wave and lower prices hit some crops. Citrus, grapes and carrots were the top three. Almonds and pistachios followed. Carrot growers here supply a large share of the country's carrots.

Energy is the other traditional pillar. Kern County produces most of California's oil, from fields like Kern River, Elk Hills and Midway-Sunset, along with a large oilfield services base. Some local energy companies are also pursuing solar and carbon capture projects.

Logistics is growing fast. A 2025 study of industrial metros found logistics made up 7.4% of local jobs in 2024, the sixth-highest share among 131 metros, with pay about 15.7% above the local average. Edwards Air Force Base and Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, both in Kern County, add a defense and aerospace layer.

B2B buyers are starting to search

Growers, packers, oilfield operators and distribution centers have long bought from people they know. Newer managers and corporate buyers now check suppliers online first. Clear capability pages and a credible site help local companies win that first look.

Energy firms are changing what they sell

Oilfield service companies moving into solar, carbon capture or other energy work need to explain new capabilities without losing existing customers. Separate pages for each line of work make that clear to buyers.

A big Spanish-speaking market

Many Bakersfield customers and workers prefer Spanish. Spanish pages, Google profile details and ads reach customers and job applicants that English-only marketing misses.

Web design leads local search

Google's data shows about 390 monthly searches for 'web design Bakersfield', rated low competition, far more than for SEO or agency searches. A focused page can rank well.

In their words

The part clients actually remember.

Not the reports. The uncomfortable conversation that changed the trajectory.

The uncomfortable part was being told our content was inoffensive to the point of being pointless. They wanted us to say things competitors would disagree with. That felt risky for a consultancy and it turned out to be the only thing that worked.
Séverine Adeyinka-GrootManaging Partner, Hallowes Partners
We were told our website was selling a campus when applicants were buying a job outcome. The data proving the outcome had been sitting in a folder for six years because nobody thought of it as marketing.

We came in wanting to fire the booking platforms. They showed us that a third of those guests had never heard of us, and that leaving would have cost more than the commission did. Then they built the thing we actually needed.
