The challenge
Lumen Labs built observability tooling for distributed systems. Their product was genuinely differentiated but their brand was indistinguishable from a dozen competitors: same dark gradient, same geometric sans, same abstract node diagram. Developers who tried the product loved it; the problem was that nobody remembered it long enough to try.
What we did
Found the differentiator worth owning
Interviews with power users kept surfacing the same phrase: it showed them the thing they didn't know to look for. That became the positioning — and the visual metaphor for the entire identity.
Built a deliberately unfashionable identity
Against category convention we went light-first, high-contrast, and typographically bold. Being visually opposite to competitors was the entire point — sameness was the problem we were hired to solve.
Rebuilt the site as a product demonstration
Rather than screenshots, the homepage runs a live interactive trace visualization using real anonymized data. Visitors understand the product before they read a word about it.
Established technical authority
Deep engineering content — distributed tracing internals, real incident post-mortems — written by engineers rather than marketers, which the developer audience could tell immediately.
The result
Inbound demo requests doubled within four months of launch. Aided brand recall in their category rose 71%, and the site earned three Awwwards honors, driving a secondary wave of design-community awareness that reached developers organically.
“We were terrified of going light-mode in a category where everything is dark. It turned out to be the whole point — people finally remembered who we were.”
