Market profile

What's actually different about Silicon Valley (South Bay)

San Jose is the largest city in the Bay Area, with about 970,000 people in 2023, according to Census estimates. The city lost residents after 2020, from just over 1 million, as high housing costs pushed people out.

It's also one of the most international cities in the US. The city's Office of Racial Equity reports that about 41% of residents were born outside the country. San Jose has one of the largest Vietnamese American communities in the US, and large Mexican, Chinese, Indian and Filipino communities as well.

The economy is Silicon Valley's. Cisco, Adobe, PayPal and Zoom are headquartered in San Jose, and Nvidia, Apple, Intel and hundreds of chip and hardware firms are a short drive away in Santa Clara, Cupertino and Sunnyvale. A Beacon Economics report in June 2026 found Santa Clara County payrolls up 1.5% in a year, well ahead of the US at 0.2% and California at 0.8%. Average wages reached about $199,000. Beacon read that as companies getting leaner and more productive, not hiring more people.

AI is reshaping all of it. AI skills now appear in about 24.5% of South Bay job postings, up from 2.9% in 2019, and the region drew nearly half of all US venture capital in 2025. The California EDD put metro unemployment at 3.7% in April 2026.

Every vendor claims AI now

Enterprise and engineering buyers in the South Bay see AI in every pitch. Claims alone get ignored. Technical documentation, benchmarks, integration details, security answers and real customer results are what move a deal forward.

Hardware and chip buyers search by spec

Engineers sourcing components, test equipment or manufacturing services search by part number, specification and standard. Suppliers that publish datasheets, capabilities and lead times in plain HTML get found. PDFs hidden behind forms do not.

Local customers speak many languages

With about 41% of residents born abroad, many local customers search in Vietnamese, Spanish, Chinese or Tagalog. Restaurants, clinics, law offices and service businesses that offer pages and Google profiles in those languages reach people competitors miss.

San Jose is not San Francisco

Many agencies treat the whole Bay Area as one market. South Bay buyers, suburbs and searches are different. Google's data shows about 390 monthly searches for 'web design San Jose' and 170 for 'marketing agency San Jose', both rated low competition.

In their words

The part clients actually remember.

Not the reports. The uncomfortable conversation that changed the trajectory.

We spent a year proud of our lead numbers while our close rate quietly fell apart, and nobody thought to ask whether we could actually service what we were buying. Cutting lead volume on purpose felt insane until the crew-week numbers came in.

We had the past performance. What we didn't have was a way to be found by someone building a bid team who'd never heard of us. Fixing that turned out to matter more than any capability we could have added.
Renata SolisVP of Business Development, Winmark Federal
We had the capacity and the certifications the whole time. We just never had anywhere for a brand doing research at 11pm to actually find any of it before deciding to call someone else instead.

Show, don't claim. Publish what your product does in plain terms, how it fits into the buyer's stack, how you handle security and data, and results from real customers. Technical content like docs, benchmarks and integration guides earns trust faster than ads.
