Market profile

What's actually different about Lancaster & Lancaster County

The city of Lancaster has roughly 60,000 residents, and Lancaster County is home to about 546,000 people, making it the sixth most populous county in Pennsylvania, according to the county government. It sits in south-central Pennsylvania, about 70 miles west of Philadelphia.

Farming is a big deal here. The county describes itself as the most productive non-irrigated farming county in the United States. It has about 5,100 farms, and their products sold for about $1.5 billion, mostly from livestock, poultry and dairy, according to a USDA-based county fact sheet.

Tourism is the other pillar. The county reports about 8 million visitors a year and roughly $2 billion in direct economic impact. Many come to see Amish country, farm stands and small towns.

The city itself has a busy downtown with galleries, restaurants and Central Market, and a steady stream of new residents from bigger East Coast metros.

Tourists search for farm tours, markets, inns and restaurants before they drive in. Accurate Google profiles, hours and good photos decide where they stop.

Newcomers expect easy booking

People moving in from Philadelphia, New York and Baltimore search and book online. Contractors and clinics with fast sites and reviews win them first.

Local search demand

Google's data shows about 90 monthly searches for 'web design Lancaster PA', with low competition. People also search Lititz, Ephrata and other towns by name.

In their words

The part clients actually remember.

Not the reports. The uncomfortable conversation that changed the trajectory.

We asked them to scope a portal with about forty features. They came back and said seventy percent of our call volume was three things, and we should build those and nothing else. I pushed back hard. They were right, and we shipped in ten weeks instead of a year.
Marguerite Oyelowo-BakkeOperations Director, Verrick Industrial
The uncomfortable part was being told our content was inoffensive to the point of being pointless. They wanted us to say things competitors would disagree with. That felt risky for a consultancy and it turned out to be the only thing that worked.
Séverine Adeyinka-GrootManaging Partner, Hallowes Partners
We were told our website was selling a campus when applicants were buying a job outcome. The data proving the outcome had been sitting in a folder for six years because nobody thought of it as marketing.
