What's actually different about Wilmington & the Cape Fear Coast
New Hanover County had about 243,000 people in 2024, up nearly 8% since 2020. The wider Wilmington metro reached roughly 480,000. The county's draft 2050 plan expects about 333,000 residents by 2050, with most of that growth coming from people moving in.
Tourism is a large part of the local economy. Visitors spent more than $1.2 billion in New Hanover County in 2025, up 5.8% from the year before, according to the study commissioned by Visit North Carolina. That ranked the county seventh of North Carolina's 100 counties, with about 7,250 tourism jobs.
Wilmington also has a homegrown financial technology cluster. Live Oak Bank, a small business lender, is headquartered here, and its SEC filings show it formed nCino in 2012 to build cloud banking software. Other anchors include UNC Wilmington, with about 18,800 students in 2024, healthcare, a GE Aerospace plant in Castle Hayne and the EUE/Screen Gems film studios.
That mix means a local business may be selling to a weekend visitor, a new retiree and a software engineer in the same week. Marketing works best when each audience gets its own message.
Summer peaks, year-round base
Beach traffic swells in summer, but a growing population keeps demand steady the rest of the year. Restaurants, rentals and attractions need visitor campaigns timed to the season, plus local search that keeps residents coming back in winter.
Newcomers choose fast
Most of the county's growth comes from people moving in. New residents need a dentist, an HVAC company and a contractor, and they pick from search results and reviews. A strong Google profile wins them early.

The part clients actually remember.
Not the reports. The uncomfortable conversation that changed the trajectory.
I spent the first two months defending our production values. Nobody was attacking them. They were pointing out that four assets a month is a math problem you cannot solve by making each one better. That distinction took me too long to hear.
We asked them to scope a portal with about forty features. They came back and said seventy percent of our call volume was three things, and we should build those and nothing else. I pushed back hard. They were right, and we shipped in ten weeks instead of a year.
The uncomfortable part was being told our content was inoffensive to the point of being pointless. They wanted us to say things competitors would disagree with. That felt risky for a consultancy and it turned out to be the only thing that worked.
Wilmington questions, answered straight.
Split them. Visitor campaigns run ahead of and during the season, aimed at people searching from out of town. Local search, reviews and email keep residents coming back all year. One message rarely works for both.
