Reno used to run on casinos. Now it runs on batteries, data centers and freight.
The country's largest industrial park sits just east of town, and some of the biggest names in tech and energy operate there. That changed who buys, who's hiring and who's moving to Reno.

What's actually different about Reno-Sparks & Northern Nevada
The Reno-Sparks metro had about 505,600 people in early 2024, according to HUD, growing a little over half a percent a year. Many newcomers have moved from California. Nevada has no state income tax.
Gaming and tourism built the city, and they still matter downtown and at Lake Tahoe. But the economy has shifted toward manufacturing, logistics and tech. The Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center in Storey County covers about 107,000 acres, which HUD describes as the largest industrial center in the country. Tesla's Gigafactory is there, and HUD names Tesla as the metro's largest employer. Panasonic makes battery cells at the same site.
Data centers are the other big story. Apple, Google, Microsoft and Switch all run operations in the region, and in 2024 developer Tract announced plans to invest about $100 billion in Storey County data centers over the next decade.
The University of Nevada, Reno and Renown Health are major employers in town. Warehousing and distribution fill the corridors along I-80, which connects Reno to Northern California ports and markets.
It isn't all growth. Local reporting has covered tech layoffs and a tougher job market for some workers, even as industrial investment continues.
Industrial buyers want proof of capability
Companies at the industrial center buy from contractors, staffing firms, equipment suppliers and service providers. They look for safety records, certifications, capacity and past industrial work. Clear capability pages win more of those inquiries.
California transplants search differently
Many new residents came from the Bay Area and Sacramento. They expect polished websites, online booking and strong reviews, and they search for services the way they did back home.
Tourism and the Tahoe crowd
Visitors to Lake Tahoe, ski resorts and downtown Reno plan ahead. Lodging, restaurants and outdoor businesses that show up in trip-planning searches and maps win bookings before travelers arrive.
SEO is the biggest local search
Google's data shows about 480 monthly searches for 'SEO Reno' and 320 for 'web design Reno', both rated low competition. Focused pages and a strong Google profile can rank well here.

Industry playbooks relevant in Reno
The part clients actually remember.
Not the reports. The uncomfortable conversation that changed the trajectory.
We'd been an insurance agency for thirty years and had never once modeled what a retained policyholder was actually worth compared to a new one. That conversation changed where every marketing dollar goes now.
Every agency before this one pitched us a better template. Digital Squad started by telling us our own locations were our biggest competitor in search, which was not what we expected to hear about our own website.
We'd worked with three agencies who all wanted to spend more on ads. Digital Squad was the first to open our P&L and tell us our hero product was losing money. That conversation was uncomfortable and it changed the business.
