Spokane is Washington's second-largest city, with about 235,000 people and a metro near 470,000. The wider Spokane-Coeur d'Alene area, which crosses into Idaho, has about 800,000.
That cross-border view matters because it's how the city really works. Spokane is the shopping, medical and business hub for a rural region covering Eastern Washington, North Idaho and parts of Montana. Seattle has no role like that.
Healthcare is the metro's biggest job sector, with about 50,400 jobs. A common assumption is wrong here: Providence and MultiCare run the main hospital networks, including Sacred Heart and Deaconess, but neither is based in Spokane. Providence is headquartered in Renton and MultiCare in Tacoma, both on the west side of the state.
Companies that are based here include Avista, the publicly traded utility, and Itron, a NASDAQ-listed smart-grid technology company in the suburb of Liberty Lake. Itron sometimes gets lumped into 'Seattle tech' coverage, but it's a Spokane company.
Kaiser Aluminum's Trentwood plant in Spokane Valley is the largest aerospace aluminum plate and sheet mill in North America. It anchors a metals-manufacturing cluster of about 8,500 to 9,500 jobs, along with Wagstaff, a global leader in aluminum casting equipment founded in 1946.
Spokane also sits on Interstate 90, the northernmost coast-to-coast interstate, and is served by both BNSF and Union Pacific. That makes it the freight gateway for the Inland Northwest, a different kind of logistics economy from Seattle's port.
A $200 million chip-materials plant expansion just broke ground
Solstice Advanced Materials started building a $200 million expansion of its Spokane Valley plant in December 2025. The plant makes sputtering targets used in chipmaking, and about $80 million of the spending is expected to go to Washington suppliers. Content that treats Spokane as a smaller Seattle misses it completely.
Washington's economy isn't the same thing as Seattle tech
Amazon, Microsoft and Boeing's factories are all in the Puget Sound region, with no major Spokane presence. Treating 'Washington' and 'Seattle tech and aerospace' as the same thing misses a whole Eastern Washington economy built on healthcare, metals manufacturing and regional trade.
