Market profile

What's actually different about Fort Collins & Northern Colorado

Fort Collins had about 170,000 people in the Census Bureau's 2023 estimate. Colorado State University is the heart of the city. CSU reported record total enrollment of 34,412 in fall 2025, counting its online students.

HUD's 2024 market analysis named CSU the area's largest employer, with about 7,600 workers, followed closely by UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital, with about 7,520. Government, including the university, made up about a quarter of all jobs. HUD described higher education, regional healthcare and tourism as the pillars of the local economy.

Beer is part of the city's identity. Odell Brewing dates to 1989, and New Belgium began brewing commercially in Fort Collins in 1991. Today the city supports more than a dozen breweries, and brewery tours are a regular draw for visitors.

The result is a market with a steady student population, a large healthcare workforce and a visitor stream with money to spend. Each group searches for different things, at different times of year.

Students turn over every year

Thousands of new CSU students and families arrive each August. Apartments, restaurants, gyms and service businesses that show up in search before move-in week pick up customers who may stay for four years or more.

Healthcare competes for patients and staff

With two of the region's largest employers in education and healthcare, clinics and practices compete hard for both patients and hires. Strong local search and a clear careers page both matter.

Beer tourism rewards good listings

Visitors plan brewery tours on their phones. Taprooms, restaurants and hotels need complete Google profiles, current hours and photos, and reviews that mention what makes them worth the stop.

Web design leads local search

Google's data shows about 170 monthly searches each for 'web design Fort Collins' and 'marketing agency Fort Collins', both low competition. For most local businesses, the website is the first fix.

In their words

The part clients actually remember.

Not the reports. The uncomfortable conversation that changed the trajectory.

We spent four months optimizing audiences when the answer was 'make more ads.' Digital Squad didn't just tell us that. They built the system that produces them. We haven't touched an audience setting in months.
Priya RaghunathanVP Growth, Atlas Foods
Our board's biggest concern was that growth stopped the moment we stopped spending. Eighteen months later most of our pipeline comes from an asset we own. That changed our fundraising conversation entirely.
Sofia LindqvistCMO, Verdant
For two years marketing and finance argued about numbers in every board meeting. Digital Squad ended that argument by building one source of truth. The $2.1M we stopped wasting was almost a side effect.
