Anchorage, AKReviewed September 5, 2026

A global cargo hub at the edge of the map, with tourism seasons that change everything.

Anchorage is home to about 40% of Alaska's people. Air cargo, the military, oil and gas, and a huge summer tourism season shape the market, and hiring workers is one of the biggest business challenges.

Market profile

What's actually different about Anchorage & Southcentral Alaska

Anchorage had about 287,000 residents in 2022, according to Census Bureau estimates, which is more than 40% of everyone in Alaska. A McKinley Research Group forecast reported by the Alaska Beacon puts the city at about 289,500 in 2024.

Its location makes it a world-class freight stop. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport ranked as the third-busiest international cargo airport in the world as of 2022, according to the Alaska Beacon. Cargo planes crossing between Asia and North America stop here to refuel and move freight.

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, formed in 2010 from the city's Air Force and Army posts, adds a large military community. Oil and gas, construction and health care round out the economy.

Tourism peaks in summer. Alaska saw about 1.65 million cruise visitors in 2023, and many pass through Anchorage. At the same time, the working-age population has been shrinking, so recruiting is a constant concern.

Summer is make-or-break for tourism

Tour operators, lodges and restaurants earn much of their year in a few months. Online booking, current Google profiles and fresh reviews help them win travelers planning months ahead.

Hiring is a marketing job

With fewer working-age residents, employers compete hard for staff. Careers pages that show pay, schedules, housing help and real photos help fill roles.

Logistics buyers want reliability

Freight forwarders, carriers and warehouses win shippers with clear services, coverage and response times. Fast quote forms beat phone tag across time zones.

Local search demand

Google's data shows about 170 monthly searches for 'web design Anchorage'. Many Alaska businesses want a partner who understands the market, not a generic Lower 48 agency.

In their words

The part clients actually remember.

Not the reports. The uncomfortable conversation that changed the trajectory.

Our lead numbers went down by two thirds and our revenue went up. It took me a quarter to stop flinching at the dashboard. Sales stopped complaining about marketing leads for the first time in six years.
Roland AchterbergCommercial Director, Girdwell Controls
They told us to switch off the marketing that was generating most of our leads. Every instinct said no. Our partners now spend their time on work they're actually good at, and we bill nearly twice as much per engagement.
Cressida BallantyneManaging Partner, Haldane Advisory
We had built a win-back campaign for people who had never used the product. Nobody had said that out loud until Digital Squad put the activation number on a slide. It was embarrassing and it was the most useful meeting we had that year.
