Two industries most agencies don't understand at all
Energy and healthcare are Houston's two economic engines, and both run on technical buyers, long cycles, and vocabulary that most marketing agencies get wrong on the first draft.

What's actually different about greater Houston
Houston is a genuinely unusual metro because it runs two enormous, technical B2B economies at once rather than one. The energy sector is not a single industry but a spectrum — supermajors, exploration and production, the Houston Ship Channel's petrochemical complex, and a real, growing renewable and low-carbon segment funded partly by the same capital and engineering talent as the incumbents. Layered on top is the Texas Medical Center: 61 member institutions on one campus, the largest medical complex in the world, which produces a healthcare market with more direct local competition packed into a smaller radius than almost anywhere in the country. Both worlds share the same failure mode — an agency writes generic content because it never got specific enough to be credible, and technical buyers in both energy and medicine notice immediately.
Energy transition buyers read as one audience, aren't
A supermajor's procurement team, an independent E&P's ops lead, and a clean-hydrogen startup's business-development hire all search adjacent terms and sit in the same LinkedIn groups — but they buy on completely different timelines and evaluate completely different proof. Content written for one reads as either too cautious or too speculative for the other two.
The Texas Medical Center compresses the competitive radius
Sixty-one institutions on one campus means a patient or referring physician can genuinely cross the street to a competitor, which is a local-search dynamic almost no other healthcare market has to plan around. Map-pack and 'near me' visibility inside the TMC footprint matters more here than brand advertising ever will.
Petrochemical and industrial buyers verify specifications immediately
Ship Channel and refining-adjacent buyers are engineers and safety officers who can check a technical claim against a spec sheet in the same meeting. Marketing that gets a unit, a tolerance, or a certification wrong doesn't just fail to convert — it disqualifies the vendor from the shortlist entirely.
No state income tax keeps pulling corporate and technical talent in
Houston's cost-of-living and tax advantage over the coasts has kept drawing engineering and medical talent for years, which means the buyer pool is growing faster than in most established industrial markets — genuinely new demand, not just replacement of retiring buyers.

Industry playbooks relevant in Houston
The part clients actually remember.
Not the reports. The uncomfortable conversation that changed the trajectory.
I told them on the first call that I wasn't going to become a TikTok personality. They built a system around that constraint instead of fighting it. Eight months later social is our biggest channel and I've been on camera maybe twice.
Every other agency said yes to our 80-feature spec and quoted nine months. Digital Squad said most of it was wrong and showed us why. That honesty is the only reason the company still exists.
Telling us to shut off ten of our eleven categories was the last thing we wanted to hear, and it was completely right. We got one category working properly and now we have a repeatable playbook for the rest.
Houston questions, answered straight.
We treat them as related but distinct buyer groups rather than one 'energy' audience. A lot of the underlying technical credibility work is the same — real engineering review, specifications that survive scrutiny — but the proof points, timelines and even the vocabulary that builds trust differ enough that we plan content and campaigns for each separately rather than writing one deck and hoping it lands both ways.
