Market profile

What's actually different about Columbia & the Midlands

Columbia is South Carolina's capital, at the center of a metro of more than 800,000 people across Richland, Lexington and the surrounding counties. State government, the University of South Carolina's flagship campus and Prisma Health are major employers.

Fort Jackson shapes the city too. It is the Army's largest initial-entry training center, and the Army says it handles roughly half of the service's basic combat training. Thousands of trainees, their families and the soldiers who train them pass through each year.

The biggest change is in Blythewood, just north of the city. Scout Motors, Volkswagen Group's new brand for electric and extended-range trucks and SUVs, is building a manufacturing campus there, with about 4,000 jobs planned. South Carolina offered about $1.3 billion in incentives. In September 2025 Scout announced a $300 million supplier park on the site, expected to add about 1,000 more jobs, and in 2026 it opened a workforce training center with Midlands Technical College. Production is targeted to start in late 2026.

That brings a wave of suppliers, contractors, staffing firms and new residents, on top of a steady government, healthcare and university economy.

Suppliers are choosing partners now

As Scout and its suppliers set up, they need local contractors, logistics providers, staffing firms, maintenance and professional services. Companies with clear capability pages and certifications get shortlisted first.

New residents need everything at once

Plant workers, supplier staff and their families moving to the Midlands search for housing, schools, healthcare, childcare and home services. Businesses that rank for those searches in Blythewood, Northeast Columbia and Lexington win new long-term customers.

A military and university town

Fort Jackson families and USC students follow fixed calendars, from training cycles and graduations to semesters and game days. Restaurants, lodging and services that time their marketing to those calendars get more from the same budget.

Web design leads local search

Google's data shows about 320 monthly searches for 'web design Columbia SC' and 170 for 'SEO Columbia SC', both rated low competition. Searches that include 'SC' matter, because there are many Columbias in the US.

In their words

The part clients actually remember.

Not the reports. The uncomfortable conversation that changed the trajectory.

We spent a year assuming we had a media problem. We had a supply problem, and nobody had put a number on it. Being shown the arithmetic (this is your fatigue rate, this is your hit rate, so this is what you must produce) ended an argument we'd been having internally for months.

The old app worked perfectly in our office, which is the one place nobody uses it. Watching them test on airplane mode from the first week told us they'd understood the actual problem faster than anyone we'd briefed before.
Marcus OyelaranHead of Operations, Trailhead Collective
We were about to increase paid budget to fix what we thought was a top-of-funnel problem. The cohort chart took ten minutes to build and showed we'd have been pouring money into a bucket with a hole in it. That meeting probably saved us a year.
