A healthcare and manufacturing economy that still markets like it's 2012

Cleveland Clinic, hundreds of industrial manufacturers and big companies spread across the suburbs. Most of their websites were built for referrals and trade shows. Their buyers now start on Google.

Market profile

What's actually different about Northeast Ohio

About 360,000 people live in Cleveland itself, but the market that matters is Northeast Ohio: roughly 2.1 million people. The biggest employers here are hospitals and manufacturers, not consumer brands.

Cleveland Clinic is Ohio's largest private employer, with more than 80,000 staff worldwide. University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University sit nearby in University Circle. The stretch of Euclid Avenue in between, called the Health-Tech Corridor, has filled up with medical-device and health-IT companies.

Downtown has a few big headquarters: Sherwin-Williams, KeyCorp in Key Tower (Ohio's tallest building) and the steelmaker Cleveland-Cliffs. Plenty of other names people call 'Cleveland companies' are actually in the suburbs. Progressive is in Mayfield Village, Parker Hannifin in Mayfield Heights and Eaton in Beachwood. Lincoln Electric is in Euclid. Goodyear is in Akron, 40 miles south. And Intel's Ohio chip plant is near Columbus, not here.

The part most agencies miss is the middle: hundreds of mid-sized manufacturers, distributors and machine shops that sell to engineers and purchasing managers. Many still rely on sales reps, referrals and PDF catalogs, while their customers have moved to Google.

Your buyer is an engineer, not a shopper

Most of the money here changes hands between businesses. An engineer comparing suppliers wants part numbers, tolerances, certifications and lead times. If your site only has a brochure page and a 'request a quote' button, they'll go to a supplier that publishes the details.

Medical practices compete with a giant

Independent clinics and health-tech startups share a city with one of the best-known hospital brands in the world. You won't beat Cleveland Clinic on broad searches. You can win the specific ones: a condition, a procedure, a neighborhood. Keep patient data out of your forms and tracking from day one.

'Cleveland' usually means the whole region

Customers and employers are spread across Cuyahoga, Lake, Summit and Lorain counties, and people search differently in each. A single 'Cleveland' page misses a lot of them.

Easy to rank, if you do the work

Google's own data rates most Cleveland marketing and web design searches as low competition. That makes ranking cheaper here than in Chicago or New York. The gap is effort, not budget.

In their words

The part clients actually remember.

Not the reports. The uncomfortable conversation that changed the trajectory.

Our offices had been competing against each other in Google for years without anyone realizing it. Fixing that alone changed the numbers before any new content was even published.
Corinne DelacroixManaging Partner, Ardent Legal
We were generating 400 leads a month and closing nothing. Now we generate almost no leads and close eight-figure pipeline. Marketing and sales finally look at the same screen.
Bernard Osei-TutuVP Marketing, Foundry Systems
We hired a marketing agency and got told, in week one, that we had a privacy problem nobody had spotted in two years. That conversation was not what we expected and it was the most valuable thing anyone has done for us.

Local questions

Cleveland questions, answered straight.

Usually, yes, and especially here, where competition for industrial searches is low. Engineers and buyers research suppliers online before they ever call a rep. Clear specs, capabilities and application pages put you in those searches and hand your reps warmer leads. They don't replace your reps.
