Rochester still makes the lenses and lasers. Its websites still look like the catalog.
Kodak, Xerox and Bausch & Lomb built a city of engineers. Today about 150 optics and photonics companies sell precision parts to buyers around the world. Most of them are hard to find on Google.

What's actually different about Greater Rochester
Rochester city has about 208,000 people. Monroe County has about 750,000, and the wider metro about 1.06 million, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The metro's population has been close to flat for a decade, so growth here comes from winning business outside the region.
The city's history is manufacturing. Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb and Xerox once employed tens of thousands here. Manufacturing jobs have shrunk a lot since the 1980s, and the New York Fed notes that health care and higher education now lead. The University of Rochester is the region's largest employer.
What the big three left behind is a deep base of optical engineers. Greater Rochester Enterprise says more than 150 optics, photonics, imaging and laser companies employ about 19,000 people in the region. It reports more than $1.1 billion in new capital investment and 4,300 new jobs in that cluster since 2017. In January 2026, GRE and the cluster group New York Photonics announced a partnership to promote the region. The research base includes the University of Rochester's Institute of Optics, its Laboratory for Laser Energetics, RIT and Monroe Community College.
Kodak is still here too. It runs Eastman Business Park, a site of about 1,200 acres with dozens of other tenants, and it has been adding regulated pharmaceutical products made in Rochester. Kodak reported higher revenue for 2025.
Rochester is also home to big consumer and service brands. Wegmans and Paychex are both headquartered in the Rochester area.
Your buyer is an optical engineer in another country
A Rochester lens, coating or laser company might sell to defense primes, medical device makers and semiconductor firms around the world. Those engineers search by specification: wavelength, coating type, tolerance, material. Sites that hide specs behind 'contact us' lose them to suppliers that publish the data.
Many shops grew on referrals from the big three
Lots of Rochester firms were founded by former Kodak, Xerox or Bausch & Lomb engineers and grew through people they knew. That network is retiring. New buyers have never heard of you, so they need a site that proves what you can make.
Capabilities beat company history
Rochester company sites often lead with founding dates and heritage. Engineers want capabilities, equipment lists, certifications like ISO 9001 or ITAR registration, and examples of parts you've made. Leading with that wins more RFQs.
Local search is a small slice, but cheap
Google's data puts 'marketing agency Rochester NY' at about 260 searches a month, with medium competition. Local service businesses can win the specific 'service plus Rochester' searches with focused pages and a strong Google Business Profile.

The part clients actually remember.
Not the reports. The uncomfortable conversation that changed the trajectory.
We were told our website was selling a campus when applicants were buying a job outcome. The data proving the outcome had been sitting in a folder for six years because nobody thought of it as marketing.
We came in wanting to fire the booking platforms. They showed us that a third of those guests had never heard of us, and that leaving would have cost more than the commission did. Then they built the thing we actually needed.
We spent a year assuming we had a media problem. We had a supply problem, and nobody had put a number on it. Being shown the arithmetic (this is your fatigue rate, this is your hit rate, so this is what you must produce) ended an argument we'd been having internally for months.
Rochester questions, answered straight.
They search for the exact thing they need, like a coating, a wavelength range or a part type, and they compare spec sheets. Pages for each product family, with real specs and downloadable data, get you on their shortlist. We build those first.
